Do you want to look dapper and sharper when you return to your workplace after lockdown? Let’s be honest, we all have enjoyed wearing anything but formal suits while working remotely.

However, after almost two years into the lockdown, the COVID-19 restrictions have eased. Most companies have started recalling their employees to the office. This means wearing business attire to work–a suit!

Wearing your formal outfit to work after lockdown is still as important as it was before. It is high time for men to know how to dress up to the nines at work.

Buckle up as we share some of the most essential suit styling rules for you.

1. Choose Your Tie Carefully

Choose a tie that matches the width of the lapel of your suit jacket. A simpler way to measure that is to compare the lapel’s widest point with the widest point of the tie. Furthermore, you need to make sure that the tie bar is not wider than the tie.

Your tie must not be too short or long. It should either be long enough to hardly touch the waistband of your pants or a little shorter than that.

2. Wear a Shirt Lighter Than Your Tie

It is a general rule that the colour of your dress shirt should be lighter than that of your tie. This ensures the tie stands out. You can never go wrong with selecting a deeper, darker shade of the shirt’s colour for the tie.

3. Do Not Over-Accessorize

You can cut a dash at work by pairing your formal attire with refined accessories. However, never over-accessorize your look. Always wear no more than two sleek and subtle accessories that go well with your outfit.

4. Do Not Directly Match Your Pocket Square to Your Tie

Pocket squares add a touch of elegance to your formal attire and a layer to your personality. Pocket squares are used to complement your conventional look. Therefore, it is important to pick one carefully.

Always ensure that the fabric’s colour or pattern differs from that of your tie. Select a secondary shade of your tie or shirt as the primary colour for your pocket square.

5. Use Guidelines to Decide Which Shoes to Wear With Your Dress

Pairing your shoes with the wrong colour dress can make you look down-at heel and ruin your look. Here, we share a safe guide to some perfectly matched combinations of suits and dress shoes:

a) You can couple your navy-blue and grey suits with any black, brown, or oxblood red shoes.

b) Avoid wearing brown dress shoes with your dark grey suit. Instead, wear black or burgundy shoes.

c) If you choose a brown dress, avoid black shoes. Rather, pair it with either your brown or oxblood red shoes.

d) A black suit goes well with black footwear. Avoid oxblood red and brown tones.

6. Wear Long Socks

Although ankle socks have become “a thing” these days, they are not meant to be worn in a formal dress code. You may wear your ankle socks with sneakers and loafers. You may wear them to the gym. But, if you want to look great at work, wear socks long enough to not expose your legs when you sit. Also, avoid wearing white socks to the office.

The Bottom-Line…

For men going back to their offices for work, looking their best is as inevitable as giving their best. Follow the essential suit styling rules if you want your looks to go from ordinary to extraordinary. Always choose a tie according to your suit and never over-accessorize your formal garb. Pair off your suit with the right choice of dress shoes.
